Description

My favorite photo from my time in Greenland. I don't really know why this abandoned house with a broken window means so much to me. Something to meditation on, I suppose.

I am ecstatic to find the negatives. They have been missing for many years and I thought them to be lost.

This was taken with a fixed focus 110 camera. It was so cold I had to keep the camera in my parka to prevent the film from freezing. The result is that the film had reduced sensitivity and the print became grainy. The image is scanned in at 9600dpi to png format using an Epson Perfection 4490 Photo flatbed scanner with negative insert.

I am Linux user and my photo tool of choice is GIMP (also available for Windows). I tried the despeckle tool but it didn't give me the results I liked. Sharpness was lost and didn't add back in well using the sharpness tools. The GREYCstoration does a much better job of despeckle than the default filter - again, at the cost of unrecoverable sharpness. I explored around a bit and happened on the "wavelet denoise" filter. I selected RGB and performed a denoise per color channel. Pure awesome. It looks so much better, now. Perhaps later I shall show the difference.
